Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Theerthavari @ Paranur

Jai Sri Madhuri Ramana! Jai Sri Radhika Ramana !

Thai Theppotsavam” is widely conducted in many Kshetrams. Theppotsavam for our Sri Bhakthakolahalan falls on the 5th day of the auspicious ‘Thai’ month.

Theerthavari :

Many were waiting at the break of dawn having gathered around the Dhwajastambam to have Sri Sri Anna’s first darshanam for the day. Sri Sri came out of Bhavukaranam while the doors of the majestic Rajagopuram were opened. Sri Sri proceeded to Kolahalan kovil for Prabhodanam. Kolahalan and Radhai were wrapped in blue shawls.

At sharp 8 a.m, Sri Sri Anna went to Perumal Kovil where Alankaram for Perumal and Ubhaya nachiyars were going on. Perumal and the Thayars were beautifully decorated and Deeparadhai was shown. Perumal wore a light off-white colored vashtram with His crown decorated with jasmine garlands. The Ubhaya nachiyars wore pink and blue respectively, beautifully decorated with stone-studded pinnal. Purappadu started and reached the Rajagopuram. The Virudavali (Virudavali by Devas to Perumal, before Vritrasura Yuddham: Srimad Bhagavatam VI-9) was chanted and Sri Sri was much immersed in the Stuthi throughout. Following this, Sri Sri Anna started the “Govindha Govindha” naamam and Perumal raced through the streets very quickly to reach the Theerthavari mantapam! The Sthapanam started right away and Sri Sri Anna went to the Aathangarai. People were quick to follow and Sri Sri sat casually on the sands with the kids and asked them to play there. The kids who are well used to playing with Kolahalan during Maadumeythal Utsavam, were so happy. Sri Sri enjoyed seeing them play and gave instructions to them. Sri Sri returned right on time when the Sthapanam was about to end. While namavalis were sung, the screen was opened for the Abhishekam to commence. Seeing our Perumal sans ornaments is a beautiful anubhavam, with the shankachakram, gadhai and Abhaya hastam clearly visible. The weapons looked more like His oranaments, lightly clutched to His hands. Sri Sri performed the Thirumanjanam amidst Purusha Sookta chanting. This was followed by Alankaram, Poojai, Saatrumurai and theertham. Sri Sri placed the Sri Shataari for everyone. After the prasadams were given, Perumal started from there and reached the temple, Poojai was performed followed by Vishramanam.

Upanyasam:

At around 3 pm, Sri Andal Charitram Upanyasam by Gomatam. Sri Mukundachari started as a conclusion for the Dhanurmaasa Thiruppavai Upanyasams, combining Vaishanava Samhitai and Paasurams, ending with Andal Kalyanam. Sri Sri sat on the other thinnai of Perumal Kovil enjoying the Upanyasam and went once to inspect the Theppam, which was meticulously built. Sri Sri performed the Anugraha Bhashanam at the end highlighting the importance of Kainkaryam, whose excerpt is as below:

“Vachika kainkaryam is being done by Sri Mukundachari every Dhanurmaasam to Sri BhakthaKolahalan. To do such Kainkaryam, one must never hesitate to rightfully ask and get it. Every day in the month of Maargazhi, Thiruppavai Upanyasam was done and it ends with Andal Kalyanam today. If there is one thing that is greater than Prema Bhakthi, it is the Kainkarya nishtai. Once seeing Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsar in a great Bhaava samadhi, Ma Sharada to whom He was Guru, Deivam and Bharta, requested Him to share with her, a small part of the greater bliss that He was going through, to which Sri Paramahamsar replied that there was nothing He had, that couldn’t be shared with Sharadamma. The next day, Sharadamma attained the Anubhooti and was in Nishtai for hours together. Seeing this, one of her disciples cooked for Paramahamsa and packed them in a carrier and placed in His room. At night, when Saradamani devi came out of her nishtai and went to Pramahasar’s place to offer her Pranaams, she was startled to notice that the tiffen carrier was still heavy. Seeing this she prayed to Him that she should never get such Bhava samadhis ever again and that she should always be engaged in Kainkaryam. In every other Kshetram, Adhyayanotsavam ends with Nammazhwar Moksham. Only for our Kolahalan, Adhyayanotsavam ends with Kalyanam.”

Upanyasam was followed by Poojai. Sri Sri started off the Sahasranamam and went to perform Alankaram for Kolahalan.

Theppam:

Right away after Sahasranamam, Kolahalan purappadu started. Words always fall short to describe His purappadu. Kolahalan emerged in a pink colored winter-vasthram over His peethambaram, adorned with thick garlands along with Radhai. He reached the Naalu-Kaal mantapam, and the Virudavali was rendered by all devotees followed by Vijayapanchakam. Sri Sri walked before Kolahalan, halting here and there, waiting for Him. The Theppam was beautifully decorated, its tower adorned with photos of Muralidaran and many other rare photos of Kitta-radhai. The background of the center stage where Kolahalan was seated had a lovely painting of Kitta with Gopis. Across the trees were colorful serial bulbs glowing, beautifying the whole arena. Awaiting Kolahalan’s arrival, the residents had already started floating deepams in the water.

Kolahalan carefully emerged forth to ascend the decorated Theppam. Sri Sri Anna instructed the Nadhaswara group to enter the Theppam, did deeparadanai and sat on the steps, admiring everything around. Kolahalan enjoyed the colorful fireworks that lit the sky and started to move gently in the Theppam which was beautified much by the moon light. The reflection of the illuminated theppam in the placid waters and the fireworks presented a spectacular sight against the night sky. Sri Sri enjoyed the kritis played in Nadaswaram during the first 2 rounds. Sri Sri Anna along with Sri Sri Manni went into the Theppam for the 3rd round. Sri Sri Manni, along with Smt.Subhadra sang the Nauka songs from Radhika Shatakam –

“Nandabala hare Nandabala, -Sharadambare, Yaati sakhi hamsa nauka”

and the 3rd round came to end. Sri Sri Anna showed deeparadanai and gave prasadams to Kainkaryaparaals of the Theppam. Kolahalan started off towards temple and huge coconut was broken before Kolahalan and Sri Sri to ward off all evil eyes. While returning near Sadhu baba mandapam, the Nadaswaram played Sri Sri Anna’s kriti “Govindha Krishna Nandabala”, which was much enjoyed by Sri Sri as well as everyone.

The day ended with early Dolotsavam to the divya dampati.

Jai Sri Radhekrishna.
